Brighton & Hove Tri, ITU Sprint World and ETU European Standard Qualifer 2020

2 months 5 days ago #3947 by Jan Forrester
Nicky Dick travelled down to the south coast for the Brighton and Hove Tri, the only qualifying race she could fit in for the ITU World Sprint qualifier champs in Edmonton, Canada 2020 -  a real gamble.
Having a lot of family heritage from there she knew the location well, and what the beaches (stony, pebbly no sand) and roads are like.
The 800m seas swim off the beach was fabulous, straight onto the beach, ouch ouch ow, and into the bike racks. STTTTOOOOOP the marshals shouted, the race has been stopped due to two crashes in the men's race ahead. We stood in a very British orderly queue, knowing our swim times were already registered . After 10 minutes we were let out onto the roads in batches of 5 and pack raced at bonkers speeds around the closed roads for 20k. Off the bike and a 5k run along the seafront. Hundreds of seasiders shouting and cheering us on. A fabulous atmosphere.
The 11 or so men who crashed were mostly OK, only one collarbone break but a lot of skin and Lycra on the road.
The results now have to be rethought to account for the stoppage so no one really knows who goes to Edmonton and who doesn't.
Long drive back with radio 2 in Hyde Park for company in too many traffic jams
