Despite growing up in the north east, I’d never heard of the “Charm Bracelet”until this new race popped up. I now know that it’s a sculpture which sits atop the cliffs just outside Saltburn, and it’s made from steel associated with the nearby mining and steel industries. Officially known as the Circle, it is adorned with 10 “charms” linked to local folklore.
The race itself follows a section of the Cleveland Way, from Redcar to Whitby. The route is stunning – especially on a clear day with a glorious sun rise over the North Sea. There are some tough climbs from the beach up to the cliff tops, most notably at Saltburn, Skinningrove and Runswick Bay. Total ascent was around 890m/2,900ft.
Generous cut off times mean the race is open to walkers as well as runners. For those fancying a shorter distance, there is also a half marathon option. In the marathon, first male was Andrew Kilding (03:50:10). First female was Mel Evans (04:12:52). Ian Watson was the only MAC representative (running in 2nd claim colours), finishing in 7th place in 04:15:23. Special mention to Ian’s sister Danielle running her first ever marathon.
