Cordwell Colossus

Cordwell Colossus

On Saturday 10th August two MACs decided to spice up their long training runs by entering the Cordwell Colossus. This relatively new trail race, now in its third year, is the brainchild of the local mountaineering gurus at First Light Adventure. Starting near Dronfield, it promises a scenic 20-mile odyssey through the heart of North Derbyshire.

The race is minimally marked but you can get round easily if you have basic navigation skills (i.e. GPS and electronic map). There are friendly marshalls dotted around the course, mostly at road crossings. There are two aid stations with all the smorgasbord of delicious goodies you would normally expect (water, squash, coke, sweet/savoury foods).

The race was punctuated by a few lung-busting climbs with nearly 3000ft elevation gain overall. The race directors did an exquisite job of decimating the dreaded brackeny overgrowth, leaving our shins in relatively good nick at the end.

In terms of race performance, we ran at a leisurely “ultra pace” to practice the requirements of my upcoming race in September. Caroline Robertson trotted along with me chatting all the way, and shared navigation duties which was a real treat. This meant I could periodically relax and enjoy the views whilst munching on a salty boiled potato – delectable. It was a hot day but this also meant it was dry and pleasant underfoot.

Despite the easy pace, we were pleased to come 30th and 31st overall from a field of 80 finishers. Perhaps we will put in more effort next year (probably not). We will definitely be back either way. A highly recommend race which could soon become a firm favourite in the race calendar.

First male was Luke Dan in 3h4m
First female was Sue Atkinson in 3h9m
