Derby Runner League XC – Race 1 – Shipley

Caroline Robertson reports

A great morning for the DRL cross country at Shipley Park. Windy and overcast conditions lifted to bring sunshine and milder temperatures for the first race in the winter league. By the time the race started it was even a little too warm for some!
We had a moderate MAC turnout of 12 athletes representing the club. Extra kudos to Nick Gant who attended Rich’s down hill running session in cromford at 9am and still made it to Shipley for 11am – and had a cracking run!
Special mention also to Faye who arrived back from the UAE last night and partner Steve who signed up to join the club just this morning. Talk about a baptism of fire! Welcome to the club Steve!
Ben Meakin was first MAC back in 33rd
Followed by Nick in 61st. Geoff was 86th closely followed by Ian in 90th. Becky came in in 100th with Faye hot on her heels in 105th. Steve, who was regretting his thermal base layer 🥵 gave a solid performance for his first MAC event in 126th! The mighty Mick gave a sprint finish to hold off incoming runners in 140th and Rob Curtis wasn’t far behind in 164th. The ladies were brought home by Nicky in 186th and Lisa put in a sprint finish for 236th. Tom had some chest trouble and called it a day half way but did exert additional energy cheering and wrestling the tent back in the bag with Mick and Nick!
Cake, hot drinks and post race chat were all much enjoyed. Was great to see everyone supporting each other. Excellent efforts from everyone and hope to see even more of us there next time.
