Hardmoors 60

The Hardmoors 60 is a race covering approximately 63 miles, from Guisborough to Filey, along the dramatic and scenic Cleveland Way National Trail along the North Yorkshire coast.

On a wet and windy morning, 167 people lined up in the solo race (there is also a relay). Following a legendary Hardmoors race briefing, the race started at 8am. Beginning in Guisborough, the route ascends through woodland and moorland to Highcliff Nab, before descending into the charming seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, known for its Victorian pier and cliff lift. From there, the route hugs the coastline, passing through quaint fishing villages like Runswick Bay and Staithes, each with narrow streets and rich maritime history. The route continues to Whitby, a bustling town famed for its gothic abbey, Dracula connections, and traditional fish and chips. Fortunately, the weather kept most people away, meaning the streets were easy to navigate. The top of the 199 steps by Whitby Abby marks the halfway point. Unfortunately, there was no time to stop for a beer and pizza at the brewery located there.

Heading south, the route then winds through Robin Hood’s Bay, a former smuggling haven, and climbs to Ravenscar, which I am informed usually offers panoramic cliff-top views (these were not on show due to thick mist). The path then descends into Scarborough, a lively resort town with sandy beaches and a medieval castle, along with Stag and Hen dos battling with inside out umbrellas providing surreal entertainment. Finally, the trail reaches Filey, a quieter coastal town with a long beach and the striking Filey Brigg headland, marking the end of the Cleveland Way and the race.

For MAC, I finished in 52nd place in 16 Hours 34 minutes
