Peak Raid 2025, Event 2, Hayfield
On Sunday a contingent of MACs went to the West side of the Pennines to enjoy the delights of the second of this year’s Peak Raid events based around Hayfield and up on to the Southwestern edge of the Kinder plateau.
The mist cleared nice and early, so we had a lovely clear crisp morning, unlike Matlock apparently. We all spent several hours running, walking and looking confused in my case trying to find the various controls placed to test the participants navigation, route planning and decision-making skills.
At the start of the event, you are handed a map showing the controls you can try and reach. Each control has a different number of points available. The idea is to try and get as many point as you can in the 3-hour time limit. If you exceed three hours you have points deducted, if you are 20 minutes late you lose all points! The maximum points available for this course was 600, although this will probably be 580 after a grumpy farmer removed one of the controls.
I saw most of the other MACs out on the course as I had decided to go clockwise on the loop and the smarter people had gone anti-clockwise. I had to deal with the low sun in my eyes for a good portion of the route. At least I learnt one thing from my previous event last year and managed to suppress my ambition to try and reach some of the far flung controls. I enjoyed the event and would recommend them to anyone who wants a change from just racing the clock (https://explorerevents.co.uk/entries/)
