Bob Foreman reports:
This New Years Eve only three MAC’s made it over to The Beehive on Hague Street, Glossop to join 160 others for the Wormstones Fell Race , 5 miles and 1’225 feet. Perfect running conditions and the forecast rain never arrived.
A short mad tarmac dash at the start, which I messed up again, to a stile where I got held up for 30 seconds. It is then all off road and a climb of nearly a mile up to the Harry Hut TP. A boggy flattish section followed by 200 yds of slabs before a very boggy/peaty descent past the Grouse Butts into the valley. Two short steep climbs, which most people forget about, and then a couple of fields and track to the finish at the side of The Beehive.
The race was won by Fraser Macdonald of Chorlton Runners in 35.01 and the first lady home was Xanthe Wray of Dark Peak, 42nd O/A in 44.59.
For MAC, a strong run by Toby Gill saw him get another festive 3rd place in 35.57, John Thorpe 45th in 45.33 and Bob Foreman 52nd, 2nd M60 in 46.37.
A great little race, one of a number put on by Des Gibbons in the Glossop Fell Races series.
Fantastic atmosphere and curry and beer available in the Beehive afterwards. An ideal way to finish the year and after enjoying the descent so much I’m sure Toby will be back again next year!
